A data protection officer will take up post at Pembrokeshire Coast National Park following authority approval.

Members at Wednesday’s (March 24) authority meeting approved the appointment of Sarah Burns to ensure the Park complies with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR and other relevant data protection laws.

Her appointment follows a tender process, chief executive Tegryn Jones said, which resulted in two people being interviewed by himself, Cllr Di Clements and Mair Thomas, interim data protection officer.

He added that there was an increase in “companies setting themselves as experts in the field and taking these functions on for a number of organisations,” with Ms Burns a co-founder and director of Data2Action.

Questions were asked about whether it was a job appointment or contract approval with Mr Jones adding it was a “contract with the company but it has to be a named person.”

There was praise for the “excellent” work carried out by Ms Thomas in the interim role and Cllr Reg Owens asked if there was a need to appoint from outside?

Mr Jones said that he discussed it with Ms Thomas, who felt it was an area that required specialist knowledge and was a complicated area to deal with.

Members unanimously approved the appointment of Sarah Burns as Data Protection Officer for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority for a three year period commencing on April 1 2021.
