PLAID Cymru has a new councillor following the death of Ceredigion’s Paul James, who was killed while out training for a charity bike ride in April.

A by-election was held in the Llanbadarn Fawr – Suilen ward of Aberystwyth on Thursday, (Jul 18).

Matthew Woolfall Jones of Capel Dewi won the majority of votes – 186 – standing against Liberal Democrat and Labour candidates.

Micahel Chappell of the Welsh Liberal Democrats received 93 votes and Labour’s Richard William Henry Layton 15.

Ceredigion County Council said the turnout for the Election was 38.16 per cent with 63 per cent of the votes going to Matthew Woolfall Jones.

Friends of Paul James completed his planned bike ride to raise funds for Bronglais and Morriston Hospitals in May, smashing his £10,000 target and raising more than £14,000.

Hundreds attending his funeral and paid tribute to the “larger than life character.”

Plaid’s newest representative will take up his role in Ceredigion in the coming days the council said.
