Plaid Leader Adam Price to visit Llanelli

A Plaid Cymru Welsh Government would end child poverty and rebuild the post Coronavirus Welsh economy, Plaid Cymru MS for Mid and West Wales has said.

Ms Jones was speaking ahead of a visit to the Llanelli constituency by Plaid Cymru Leader Adam Price MS.

In the Llanelli constituency the child poverty rate is 19.7 per cent.

In 2019, Wales was the only UK nation to see child poverty levels rise.

Plaid Cymru Leader Adam Price and the MS for Mid and West Wales Helen Mary Jones will tour the Llanelli constituency on Wednesday with a visit to Living Wage private employer Burns Pet Foods, Kidwelly, before visiting voluntary group Connecting Youth, Children & Adults CYCA) at their office in North Dock.

They will then head to the town centre and the market to speak to local businesses about how they are coping after the lockdown.

A virtual ‘Town Hall’ zoom event in the evening will give the people of Llanelli the chance to ask questions and discuss matters that are important to them with Helen Mary Jones and Adam Price.

Plaid Cymru Shadow Economy, Transport and Tackling Poverty Minister Helen Mary Jones Mid and West MS said,

“The Coronavirus crisis has exposed the inequality in Welsh society. We need change in 2021 to build back better, to improve our economy, to revive our town centres and to end child poverty for good.

“After twenty years of a Labour-led Welsh Government, there are still 200,000 children living in poverty in Wales. This is despite a promise to end child poverty by 2020. We need immediate action to help thousands of children and families across Wales.

“A Plaid Cymru Welsh Government led by First Minister Adam Price would introduce a child payment of £35 a week per child, targeted at families who have to decide between heating the home and feeding the children. Our proposal of free childcare at 12 months old would also boost the incomes of thousands of households, allowing non-working parents back into the workplace and creating up to 3,000 new jobs.

“I look forward to welcoming Adam Price to Llanelli where we will be visiting a voluntary organisation, a living wage business and seeing the excellent work of the local council to see how different groups and sectors working together can begin to improve the livelihoods of our most vulnerable in our society.
