Plaid Leader Adam Price welcomes cautious approach to easing restrictions in Wales

PLAID CYMRU Leader Adam Price has welcomed the “cautious approach” to easing of lockdown restrictions by the First Minister of Wales and “implored” the UK Prime Minister not to implement an England-wide relaxation of restrictions.

First Minister Mark Drakeford today announced that the lockdown would be extended in Wales for another three weeks with three modifications which include lifting of the once-daily exercise cap, re-opening of garden centres, and allowing local authorities to plan for the re-opening of libraries and recycling centres.

The Prime Minister of the UK will make an announcement on the next steps in restrictions Sunday.

Plaid Cymru Leader Adam Price MS said it was “impossible” to overemphasise the stay at home message with the reproduction number in Wales “so perilously close” to an exponential increase in the number of deaths.

Mr Price said whilst he welcomed the “cautious approach” adopted by the First Minister in his statement he “implored” UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson not to implement an England-wide relaxation of restrictions as this would “completely undermine” the approach in Wales and could have a “potentially disastrous impact” on Wales.

The Plaid Cymru Leader said the Welsh Government should also “significantly” step up plans to test and trace which he said had so far been “lamentably inadequate.”

Plaid Cymru Leader Adam Price MS said,

“It is impossible to overemphasise the stay at home message with the reproduction number in Wales, which measures transmission, so perilously close to an exponential increase in the number of deaths.

“We welcome the cautious approach adopted by the First Minister in his statement today, and implore the UK Prime Minister not to implement an England-wide relaxation of restrictions that would completely undermine this approach and potentially have a disastrous impact on Wales.

“The next three weeks before the lockdown is reviewed again must see the Welsh Government significantly step up their plans to test and trace which have so far been lamentably inadequate.”
