Plaid MS Helen Mary Jones responds to Llanelli restrictions

PLAID Cymru MS Helen Mary Jones has said she understands why there is a more local targeted response to the rate of Coronavirus infections in Llanelli.

Plaid Cymru Shadow Economy, Transport and Tackling Poverty Minister Helen Mary Jones Mid and West MS said:

“This isn’t the news that we wanted to hear for Llanelli, but it is understandable because of the rate of infection in the town.

“Earlier this month Plaid Cymru suggested a similar smarter form of lockdown such as this.

“This ‘smart lockdown’ cluster-based approach could be more effective. The strategy has been adopted by other countries based around micro-quarantines focused on high-infection areas within communities not a wide area untargeted lockdown, for example, across a whole local authority area.

“Carmarthenshire County Council, the Welsh Government, the health board and the local community all have to work together to bring down the rate of infection in Llanelli and its neighbouring communities.”

People can check the council website to see whether they need to take the necessary precautions.

Ms Jones added: “This is tough for everyone. People have already gone through so much, missing friends and family, and local businesses are hard it. But if everyone plays their part – washing our hands, keeping 2 meters apart and traveling as little as possible there is reason to hope the restrictions can be lifted soon”.

Not all communities in the Llanelli area will have to adhere to the restrictions. The council wards covered: Bigyn, Bynea, Dafen, Elli, Felinfoel, Glanymor, Hendy, Hengoed, Llangennech, Lliedi , Llwynhendy, Tyisha, Swiss Valley

People can check by entering their post code on Carmarthenshire County Council’s website.

If they have a health emergency or urgent care, they should continue to access care. If they need to attend for an appointment or procedure in Prince Philip Hospital or another hospital (such as Glangwili or further afield), they can still attend. This also applies for people living outside of the health protection area travelling into the area for hospital or other urgent healthcare.

Residents should get tested if they have Covid-19 symptoms – high temperature, a loss of or change to sense of smell or taste, or a new and continuous cough.

Increased testing capacity for residents at the following locations:

• Parc y Scarlets Car Park B, accessed via Trostre Retail Park, in Llanelli

• The Ty’r Nant site (next to KFC), Trostre, Llanelli

• The Carmarthen showground (signposted in both directions off the A40)
