Plans for former Wrexham pub turned into holistic therapies training academy

A FORMER pub in Wrexham could be turned into a holistic therapies training academy under new proposals.

Plans have been submitted which would see the Hand Inn on Holt Road converted into a facility where people are taught body piercing, acupuncture, tattooing, waxing and yoga.

It comes after the pub closed its doors around two years ago due to dwindling customer numbers and high running costs.

The upstairs landlord’s accommodation has since been let out as a house in multiple occupations with four rooms but the ground floor has remained unused.

The owner of the building has now identified two prospective tenants interested in running their businesses from two separate sections of the main pub.

An application put forward to Wrexham Council states:

“Unit 1 would be operated as an academy for training in holistic therapies.

“It would comprise the original bar area, two storerooms, a kitchen and what was the men’s toilets.

“The academy would train students in therapies such as body piercing, acupuncture, ink therapies (tattooing), waxing and yoga.

“To enable the trainer to maintain her professional proficiency it is likely that the therapies would also be offered to the public but on a modest scale.

“The proprietor of the academy would provide the training but guest trainers would be invited to attend from time to time.”

The second unit would see the former lounge area used as office space by a property management company with a storeroom where the women’s toilets once stood.

No physical alterations are being proposed to either the interior or exterior of the building as part of the proposals.

The application continues:

“For reasons that are clearly apparent there is no possibility and no demand for The Hand to reopen as a public house and the proposed training and office uses are acceptable to both national and local planning policy.

“The number of vehicles visiting the site will be significantly less than traditionally visited when the pub was open and much less than would visit if another use was introduced.”

The plans will be decided on by the local authority at a later date.
