PLANS for a new primary school building on Barry Waterfront are set to be approved marking a major milestone.

Ysgol St Baruc will double in size, moving from its current building on St Paul’s Avenue to the Waterfront.

The new school will have twice the capacity when opening in September next year, increasing from 210 places currently to 420. There will also be 48 nursery places.

Vale of Glamorgan council is likely to grant planning permission for the new school at a meeting on Wednesday, July 21.

Barry Waterfront Consortium will build the school, as part of a Section 106 agreement with the council. The group is made up of housing developers Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey and Barratt.

The expansion of the school should cater for growing demand for Welsh-medium primary places, from the new housing developments on the Waterfront.

Planning agents Powell Dobson said: “The vision for the school is a progessive education facility, which achieves best practice in regards to a design that supports educational achievement while being compact and value for money.

“The proposals will provide a first-class educational facility, tailor made to meet an increasing demand for a school in the Barry Waterfront area. It represents a valuable public investment in what is an increasingly popular location, and will enhance the network of local schools.”

They gave details of the plans for the school in a design and access statement, submitted as part of the planning application.

The school will be built on a two-hectare brownfield site off Ffordd y Mileniwm, opposite the Asda supermarket. The two-storey building will include 14 classrooms, one nursery room, and two halls. There will also be three grass football pitches, and a multi-use games area.

The new school was originally due to open in September this year, but the opening was delayed until next year due to negotiations between the council and the developers taking longer than expected.
