A plan to turn an empty office building into accommodation supporting people leaving hospital and older people needing accommodation was given the go-ahead.

Cabinet approved the purchase of a council rented building using its Housing Revenue Account at a cost of £200,000.

Half of this money will be transferred to Pembrokeshire County Council’s general fund and half to the trustee owners of Haverfordia House, on Winch Lane in Haverfordwest.

The first step towards creating a “Reablement Centre of Excellence and older persons accommodation” was presented by new the new cabinet member for housing Cllr Michelle Bateman at Monday’s (September 9) meeting.

Cllr Bateman highlighted the hard work of her predecessor Cllr Pat Davies in bringing the plan to this stage while Cllr Bob Kilmister called it a “win win for the area.”

It aims to provide a minimum of 12 reablement beds to prevent hospital admittance or improve discharge times, as well as 20 units of older person’s accommodation.

Reference is also made to the potential use of Rifleman’s Field car park, which backs on to the site, with any changes requiring legal changes to the current parking order.

Social service cabinet member Cllr Tessa Hodgson added: “I’m looking forward to see the ambitious and exciting plans come forward for the site.”
