PLANS to remove timber cladding from Swansea’s Meridian Quay development have been submitted.
The cladding is to be replaced by a non-combustible alternative.
The current cladding is present on six of the Trawler Road blocks at Swansea Marina, but not the 29-storey residential tower.
The six blocks are residential with some ground floor commercial units.
Swansea Council planning officers are assessing the proposed lawful development application, submitted on behalf of the complex’s management company.
The application said: “Timber cladding to be replaced with non-combustible cement board (appearance and colour is like for like), as part of ongoing statutory fire compliance works.”
Defects affecting the blocks at the complex and also the main tower were identified some time ago.
They were being rectified by Carillion plc but were not completed prior to the company’s liquidation in January 2018.
Sorting out who has been responsible for what has been an issue for the buildings’ manager, warranty insurer and leaseholders.
Last summer it was reported that rectifying the Meridian Bay and Wharf blocks alone would cost more than £5 million, and leaseholders faced contributing several thousand pounds each.
A deal was struck last winter, meaning leaseholders would not have to pay, although one leaseholder March claimed in March this year that he was still owed money he had paid up front for repairs.
