Police release pilot podcast to help parents keep up with the kids

WITH Christmas around the corner and gadgets weighing heavily in Santa’s sack, Dyfed-Powys Police has released a pilot podcast to help parents keep up with their children’s habits online.

999FM brings together the All Wales Schools Programme, a police officer from the forces’ acclaimed online investigation team and some parents of school aged children. They all have a chat over a cuppa and talk about how their children are engaging in new technology. They consider the challenges in keeping one step ahead and the resources out there to help them make the most of the online world. They’ll ask the questions that you may already be asking and share their collective knowledge to find answers.

Bethan James, Dyfed-Powys Police Regional Manager for SchoolBeat, said:

“The All Wales School Programme sees Police Officers allocated to every school across our force area. They deliver lessons to pupils throughout primary and secondary schools and are known names and faces for many young people.

We have conversations with your children at school about all sorts of things to help keep them safe, and we want to help you continue that chat at home. We hope that this pilot podcast demonstrates how we can bridge this gap between the class room and your living room.”

Episode one, ‘Online safety – Keeping up with the kids’ features two parents of primary school children, as well as Detective Sergeant Mathew Davies of Dyfed-Powys Police’s Digital Communications and Cyber Crime Unit, and is hosted by Bethan James, who leads the Welsh Government-funded schools programme in force.

The podcast is available now and can be listened to in either English or Welsh on iTunes, Spotify, Castbox, Deezer and Podcast Addict – choose your favoured provider and search 999FM.

Emma Northcote, Head of Corporate Communications for Dyfed-Powys Police, said:

“As a busy parent myself, podcasts suit my lifestyle. I regularly listen to podcasts whilst on my commute to work after the school drop-off, so something from experts that helps me understand a bit more about the world my children are influenced by, is invaluable.

“We’ve worked with Carmarthen-based ‘Stiwdio Box’ to develop this new podcast. If our communities like it, then we’ll look to make more. At a time when we’re over-run with messages and information, identifying the best way to reach the people we need to be talking to is a challenge. We’re keen to hear what our communities think of this new tool to get messages out there and what other subjects they’d like us to cover if we make more.”
