Primary school pupils receive crucial road safety training

MORE than 1200 primary school children in Carmarthenshire have been learning about roadside safety thanks to the Kerbcraft initiative.

During the last year the pupils aged between five and seven took part in 12 training sessions over a four-week period to improve their skills to become safer pedestrians.

They were taken out of school to various locations and taught how to find safe places to cross the road, including near parked cars and junctions.

The Kerbcraft training scheme is delivered by the council’s Road Safety Unit and is funded by Welsh Government.

Its aim is to teach children the importance of roadside safety and to raise awareness of safely crossing the road.

More than 1200 children have received Kerbcraft training within Carmarthenshire in the last year with a further 1200 planned for the year ahead.

All children who have completed the training are presented with certificates by road safety mascot Gary GoSafe and staff.

Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “The Kerbcraft pedestrian training scheme is invaluable as it instils the importance of road safety at an early age and ultimately saves lives. It is a vital skill that if taught at this age will remain for life.”
