Rhondda Cynon Taf Councillors to visit site for proposed cocktail bar in Pontypridd

The site where there are plans for a new craft ale and cocktail bar in Pontypridd will be visited by councillors.

An application from No. 12 Drinks Emporium plans to turn an army surplus shop on Market Street into a craft ale and cocktail bar.

It went before Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s planning committee on Thursday, August 12 and members of the committee will carry out a site visit on Tuesday, August 24 before making a decision.

It only relates to the ground floor and the first and second floors would remain as offices and a flat.

The planning report said the proposal would result in only minor alterations to the existing building with a bar and a toilet being provided inside.

The proposed bar would be open between 11am and 11pm from Monday to Friday, on Saturdays, on Sundays and bank holidays and it would employ two full-time members of staff.

There was one objection to the application which raised concern over it having an adverse impact on the legal practice above because of the playing of music, audible outside drinking and general noise.

It also raised concern about the obstruction of access to the legal practice and that the current music and seating are not “in-keeping” with the retail and takeaway area with bars and hotels situated in the broader and more open areas of Market Street.

But planning officers at the council recommended approval.

They said in the report: “The proposed use of the unit as a craft ale and cocktail bar would add to the vitality and viability of the town by attracting footfall to this area of the town during the day and the night, thereby contributing to the daytime and evening economy of the town.

“The proposal would not result in any significant alterations to the external fabric of the existing building and it is not considered that it would have an adverse impact upon the character and appearance of the site or the surrounding conservation area.

“Furthermore, the proposed hours of opening are considered to be reasonable
and it is not considered that the proposal would have any additional impact
upon the amenity of surrounding commercial and residential occupiers than
that already experienced as a result of its town centre location and the location of similar establishments in the vicinity.”
