THREE schools are set to battle it out to become Carmarthenshire Young Traders of the Year 2019.
Saron, Teilo Sant and Meidrim schools will all compete in a trade off at Carmarthen Market next Wednesday between 10am-2pm in a bid to win the title.
The annual competition involves Year 6 pupils setting up a business and turning it into a profitable enterprise.
The children must plan, purchase material/products, brand/decorate it and run it themselves on a stall in the outside market for a day.
The winning team will be the school which has made the most profit at the end of the day and any money made goes towards their school.
Over the course of the challenge, pupils can improve their employability skills, gain a greater understanding of the world of work and make a positive contribution to the community they live in.
Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member responsible for markets, Cllr David Jenkins, said: “This competition is always very popular with children and there are clearly a lot of them out there with some great business ideas. As well as making money for their school this competition is an excellent opportunity for children to gain first-hand experience of what’s it’s like to set up and run their own business and to try their hand at trading for a day. I hope as many people as possible come out to support them and help make their trading experience a success.”
Each of the teams has been given £100 donated by businesses in Llanelli, including St Catherine’s Walk and Merlin’s Walk.
The council’s markets manager, Paul White said: “I would like to wish all our budding entrepreneurs all the very best of luck and would urge shoppers to come out to support them on Wednesday at Carmarthen Market.”
