Shadow Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens MP, on the resignation of the Prime Minister said:
“The Conservative Party has lost its mandate to govern. It has crashed the economy through a reckless and unnecessary ideological experiment to top off 12 years of failure.
“The Conservative legacy of this destructive project is a catastrophic cost-of-living crisis, higher mortgages, rents and inflation with hard-earned pensions at risk. Working people are paying – and will be paying for this grotesque negligence for years and years to come.
“The public deserves so much better than this. The UK’s reputation and financial credibility has been shredded by these incompetent Tories. There should be a general election now. Let the public make the decision about who should be the next Prime Minister and government.”
