Sports and recreation association licence approved in Pembrokeshire

A COMMUNITY facility to help “keep the village alive” was granted a licence to sell alcohol and play music this week.

The Herbrandston Sports and Recreation Association’s licensing application was approved by committee at Pembrokeshire County Council on Thursday, December 5.

Objections from neighbours Simon and Sharon Reynolds were highlighted at the meeting along with a submission  from the village pub, the Taberna Inn, which stated it would close in the New Year if the licence was granted.

Secretary of the association, and county councillor for the area, Reg Owens, said that the concerns were taken seriously and everything would be done to minimise disturbance and anti-social behaviour.

Cllr Owens said the association had been in existence for 30 years and hosted sports and community events, with the building itself constructed due to local support.

“The community input into this building has been tremendous,” he said.

He told the committee that the village used to have two pubs, adding “there’s no way we want the Taberna to close”, highlighting that it had been on the market for some time.

The committee heard that the application hours of 11am to 11pm daily were to allow for possible use rather than regular openings, with sports matches the most common events.

There was potential for the community to use the site for a summer fair or carnival.

“We are very proud of this project and it can get quite emotive talking about, a lot of work has gone into it and it’s for the community.

“We are determined to try and keep as many facilities in the village – that’s what keeps the village alive,” said Cllr Owens.
