Swansea businessman’s car park breaches planning rules

A BUSINESSMAN who set up a car park in Mumbles has been told by Swansea Council to stop using it because it appeared to breach planning rules.

The Langland Road car park has pay and display machines and around 40 spaces, and overlooks Underhill Park.

The owner, Jason Banfield, said he was appealing the council’s enforcement notice.

The notice said the use of the land as a car park was previously refused planning permission because it was, being near a bend, unsuitable for this purpose and would therefore adversely impact on safety conditions for drivers and pedestrians.

The council’s planning department gave Mr Banfield and Allied Parking UK, which manages the car park, six weeks to comply with the notice.

Mr Banfield told the Local Democracy Reporter Service that he is appealing.

The land used to accommodate a nursing home. Plans were submitted at one point for a car wash business, but the scheme was turned down by the council.

Parking in Mumbles can often be frustrating for residents, workers and visitors.

One woman who works on Newton Road, which is off Langland Road, said she’d had four parking tickets in the last two months.

The worker, who asked not to be named, said the Langland Road car park was a good option, costing £3 per day. She said she used it two or three times a week.

“It’s easy to park there, as you can pay online, but it’s not the greatest in terms of surface,” she said.

“I don’t think a lot of people know about it.”
