Swimmers complete Llandudno Lifeboat RNLI Mayday Mile charity challenge

‘MAYDAY’ has been an urgent call for much needed help. Usually, RNLI lifesavers answer mayday calls and go to rescue others. But this May, with the busiest summer season on the way, it’s they who have needed our help.

Llandudno volunteer crew member Ewa Bajerska has now finished ten miles for the Mayday campaign. This has been achieved by swimming from Llandudno Lifeboat Station to the Sailing Club, approximately one mile away over the last few weeks.

Ewa was grateful to be joined by another RNLI supporter Kate Wright who has also been raising funds for the campaign. Talking about the challenge Ewa said, ‘I was delighted to have Kate swimming with me, it made such a difference. We made sure we were safe in the water, we had a spotter or two walking along the shore, wet suits, swimmer’s buoyancy aids, gloves and swimming hats. Even so, it was still extremely cold in the water, and we would always finish with a numb face! Due to the unseasonal weather conditions we had to reschedule some of the swims including one at a very cold Lake Geirionydd!’

‘Both Kate and I wish to give a massive thank you to all who have supported us with donations and of course the friends and family on the shore who have ensured our safety’.

The people who kindly provide donations, are giving RNLI lifesavers what they need to rescue others, and to come home safe themselves. From first aid training to the breathable kit that helps them keep their cool, there are so many vital things the public can help to fund.

Ewa and Kate have now passed an impressive total £900 and are hoping to reach a magical £1,000 before closing their appeal.
