CEREDIGION councillors said they hoped the scrapping of the M4 relief road would mean more money for sustainable transport.
As they discussed an agreement to allow Welsh Government to take over re-issuing concessionary travel passes at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting (June 4) reference was made to increasing funds for bus services and other public transport.
Cllr Alun Williams said he hoped the decision not to build a new road at Newport, Gwent, would “mean more money for sustainable transport options across Wales, not just 16 miles.”
He added that a “better funded transport system for the whole of Wales for the future” was needed.
While Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn, council leader, said she hoped the money that was to have been invested in the relief road would be distributed fairly across the country.
Cabinet agreed that Welsh Ministers would act as agents on behalf of the authority to bulk re-issue concessionary travel passes by the end of the year.
A report to cabinet states that there are around 18,000 concessionary travel pass holders in Ceredigion and the council receives £3 per pass annually for administration costs involved with the all Wales scheme.
The provision of the £3 cost will continue through 2019/20, it adds.
