FOLLOWING the death of Queen Elizabeth II, tributes are pouring in from Gwent civic members.

The High Sheriff of Gwent, Malgwyn Davies OBE, said: “Along with countless people across the world, I was initially shocked to hear the breaking news about Her Majesty and then saddened when her passing was announced.

“Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for practically the whole of my life and is someone we have always admired and respected. She is a role model for all those involved in public service.

“I wish to express my sincere condolences to King Charles III and the whole of the Royal Family.”

The High Sheriff of Gwent will conduct a proclamation at Newport Civic Centre, at 2pm on Sunday, September 11.

Civic flags are being flown at half mast in both Caerphilly County Borough and Newport today. A book of condolences is available at Ty Penallta in Ystrad Mynach.

Leader of the council, Sean Morgan, said: “On behalf of Caerphilly County Borough Council and the residents of our area, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the Royal Family following the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.

“This sad news is a huge loss for our nation. Her Majesty’s dedicated and tireless service to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth over the past 70 years has been a shining example to the world.

“The national pride and adoration that was on display during the recent Platinum Jubilee celebrations clearly demonstrated what the Queen means to all of us.

“On this sad day, we will reflect on Her Majesty’s life and her positive and long-lasting legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.”

Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough, Cllr Elizabeth Aldworth, said: “Caerphilly County Borough Council wish to express our great sadness following the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. On behalf of the people of Caerphilly county, I would like to express our most heartfelt sympathy to the Royal Family at this very sad time.

“The Queen has ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history, becoming a much loved and respected figure across the globe.

“Her extraordinary reign has seen her travel more widely than any other monarch, undertaking many historic overseas visits. Known for her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service, she has been an important figurehead for the UK and the Commonwealth during times of enormous social change.

“The Queen believed strongly that public and voluntary services were one of the most important elements of her work and served as Royal Patron or President for over 600 charities, military associations, professional bodies and public service organisations.

“We have already seen an outpouring of condolence messages for our Queen who was a Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, a woman that gave so much during her reign.”

Mayor of Newport, Cllr Martyn Kellaway, said: “Newport City Council is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“As our longest ever reigning monarch, she committed many years of loyal service to the country and for that we give our utmost thanks.

“Newport was honoured to welcome Her Majesty to the city on several occasions and holds its status as a jubilee city in high regard.

“We extend the sympathy of the council and the city to the royal family at this time.”
