Views wanted on next phase of Porthcawl waterfront regeneration

BRIDGEND Council is seeking views on proposals that will support the next phase of its ongoing regeneration plans for Porthcawl.

The council wants to amend the designation for how almost 20 hectares of land in the Sandy Bay and Griffin Park area can be used to deliver the regeneration of Porthcawl’s waterfront area in accordance with both the Local Development Plan and the recently approved Placemaking Strategy.

The plan includes a 900 housing development and a possible new school.

To facilitate this, the council will soon publicise a notice of intention outlining how it intends to appropriate the land and consider any representations that may be received before making a decision.

Under council plans the site, which includes the amusement park, will become available for mixed-use development featuring all-new retail, commercial, recreational, housing and leisure opportunities.

To support the mixed-use development, a new vehicular route would be constructed and the site would also feature an all-new school or expanded educational facilities. Griffin Park would be expanded, open space improved and approximately 900 homes introduced alongside facilities for new businesses and visitors.

Notices advising people about the proposal were placed on site on Monday 6 June along with other publicity, and all comments received will be reported to Cabinet before a final decision is made.

Alternatively, people can visit Porthcawl Library in Church Place (CF36 3AG) between 9.15am-6pm on Monday, 9.15am-5pm on Tuesday, 9.15am-1pm on Wednesday and 9.15am-5pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

“The proposed appropriation represents an exciting and important step in unlocking the potential of the waterfront area, and forms an essential part of our ongoing overall regeneration plans for Porthcawl. By definition, appropriation is a formal legal process which enables land to be transferred from one use to another for planning purposes.

Cabinet previously agreed in principle to appropriate this land for alternative use in order to deliver upon its full potential, so I am pleased to see that the regeneration plans are progressing and that we are now in a position to take this forward.

As we also want to continue to work closely alongside our partners and local residents to deliver this for the benefit of the entire community, I hope that people will study the plans and make full use of this opportunity to have their say on the proposals.
