‘We need a council that creates a way out of poverty,’ says Labour candidate for Garnant Kevin Madge

Kevin Madge has been a Labour councillor for over 40 years. He has been leader of the county council and Mayor for Garnant.

Speaking to us ahead of the local elections in May he said that he is passionate about the job.

He said: “There is a  huge task ahead with a cost of living crisis. The council will face biggest challenge in its history. People will be turning off heating and there will be families in food poverty.”

He said things could get worse but he would work hard. “I hold regular surgeries, I love Garnant to bits and I will work hard to represent the residents” he said.

Cllr Madge said that he was happy with the Plaid and Labour agreement in the Senedd because it helps push radical policies through. “If they want to support the policies the Labour Government got elected on I am fine with that” he said.

Speaking about the Plaid administration he said: “At a local level they have a lot to answer for. Over £36m has gone into two projects in Carmarthen and Llandeilo. You think what we could have done with that money. I am really angry about that. We could have really transformed the Gwendraeth and Amman Valley with that money.”
