Welsh Government Health Plan and the future of Prince Phillip Hospital

Lee Waters, Llanelli’s Member of the Senedd for Llanelli, has praised Welsh Government’s plans to bring two additional operating theatres to Prince Phillip Hospital.

The local hospital is set to receive an investment of just under £20m as Welsh Government sets about transforming planned care in Wales and cutting waiting times over the next four years.

The two new operating theatres at Prince Phillip Hospital will treat an additional 4,600 people a year.

Lee Waters MS said:

“We all know the affect that the Covid 19 pandemic has had on our NHS with appointments and treatments being postponed for hospital staff to focus on caring for the large number of people who were ill with coronavirus.”

“Reducing these waiting times and making sure that people are able to access necessary treatment is essential. This will require new solutions, more equipment, new facilities and more staff to help diagnose people quickly.”

Speaking of Prince Phillip Hospital, Lee Waters added:

“These new theatres will be a massive help to reduce the backlog for people living in the Llanelli constituency who are waiting for treatment.”

Deryk Cundy Chair of the SOSPPAN Committee and County Councillor for Bynea said:

“Hywel Dda have continued to work with SOSPPAN and to take on our concerns regarding the continuation of the excellent services that they provide at PPH. Utilising the funding from Welsh Government by creating a further two wards shows, in actions rather than words, that Hywel Dda are keeping their commitment to the people of Llanelli, something that we are extremely grateful for.”

The Welsh Government will provide an extra £60m over the next four years for health boards; meaning that more than £1bn has been committed this Senedd term to help the NHS recover from the pandemic.

The Health Minister said the plan aims to ensure no one will be waiting more than a year for treatment in most specialties by Spring 2025.
