NEW lighting along part of Swansea’s promenade should give walkers, runners and cyclists an extra reason to stretch their legs, say councillors.

Contractors are installing the low-level lighting along the West Cross section of the prom.
It’ll come on early in the morning and go off shortly before dawn, then come on again in the evening and go off in the middle of the night.

The £80,000 job is being funded by West Cross councillors Mark Child and Des Thomas through their community budget – a sum of money given to all councillors for projects in their ward. They’ve seen a demonstration of the technology, and were impressed with the results.

Cllr Thomas said: “This will be low-level lighting so as not to effect the night sky, all the way from Norton to Mayals, and will be a big enhancement without being bright or dominant in any way.

“People who saw the trial have given their 100% support to this project.”

He said it would be good if other councillors whose patch covered the prom extended the LED lighting scheme.
Cllr Child said he was thrilled with what was coming, and reckoned it would be operational from spring onwards.

“It probably won’t make too much difference during the lighter summer nights, but in winter it will double the time the prom can be enjoyed,” he said.

Separately, new play equipment with a maritime theme for the nearby Blackpill Lido area will be funded Mayals councillor Linda Tyler-Lloyd.
