TWO new schemes worth a combined £1.1m will provide training and work placements at Swansea Council for graduates, the unemployed and the economically inactive.

The schemes are among dozens being funded by the council’s Economic Recovery Fund, which is aimed at helping the city’s residents, businesses and communities recover from the economic impact of the pandemic.

Initially running for the next two years, the £500,000 graduate place training project will fund recruitment into a variety of training schemes, leading to professional qualifications and potential full-time employment in areas like strategic planning, regeneration and heritage, waste strategy, public health, highways and transportation, culture and tourism, and asset management.

A £600,000 scheme running until 2024 is also planned to create a rolling programme of six-month employment placements for the unemployed and economically inactive people of all ages. Fifty placements are planned, enabling those who take part not just to earn an income but also to benefit from new skills and improved CVs. The council would also then provide job search support at the end of each placement.

Cllr Alyson Pugh, Swansea Council’s Joint Cabinet Member for Supporting Communities, said:

“The combination of these schemes won’t just give graduates the opportunity to pursue professional qualifications at the council, but they’ll also enable employment placements and work-based support for the unemployed and the economically inactive, who are among those most in need in communities throughout Swansea.

“As we emerge from the pandemic, this kind of support is now more needed than ever.”

Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, added: ”

“We soon hope to announce details on how people can benefit from these schemes as part of a multi-million pound package of support that’s aimed at continuing to help Swansea recover from the impact of the pandemic in the coming months and years.

“With dozens of projects already approved and millions of pounds having been allocated, our Economic Recovery Fund is already making a difference to Swansea – and there’s lots more to come.”

As part of the council’s £25m Economic Recovery Fund, more than £15m has now been committed to over 60 projects throughout Swansea.

Other projects covered by the fund include free bus travel initiatives, the provision of free outside public space use for businesses to expand, a new energy awareness hub in the city centre, and free marketing support for hundreds of tourism businesses.
