A GROUP looking after a historic building in Pembroke Dock have been granted a year’s free rent by the County Council if they spend the money saved on repairs and maintenance.

The Sunderland Trust, which made the grade II* listed Garrison Chapel in the town’s former Royal Dockyard its home in 2014, has requested support from Pembrokeshire County Council.

It houses the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre and a long lease has been agreed to help with grant funding access and future plans.

A previous application for a Community Asset Transfer had been refused.

Cabinet member for finance Cllr Bob Kilmister said that the council’s strategic asset management group supported the free rent as long as the money saved was spent on the fabric of the building.

It also wanted to “ensure the new lease is strictly enforced” adding, “it’s very important that they do comply with the new lease,” said Cllr Kilmister.

What work is required will be decided in discussions with the Sunderland Trust.
