A FORMER north Wales Parliamentary candidate, who also grew up in the region, has been elected to Westminster in a shock by-election win for the Liberal Democrats.
Sarah Green, originally from Corwen and a graduate of Aberystwyth University, contested the Ynys Môn constituency in the 2005 and Arfon in the 2010 General Elections, finishing fifth and fourth respectively.
But last night saw the fluent Welsh speaker, and former chair of the youth wing of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, overturn a 16,000 Conservative majority to capture the Chesham and Amersham constituency in Buckinghamshire.
With the by-election prompted by the death of former Welsh Secretary, Dame Cheryl Gillam – who herself was born in Cardiff – Sarah Green secured a majority of 8,028.
In her victory speech, Ms Green said: “Tonight the voice of Chesham and Amersham is unmistakable.
“Together we have said, ‘enough is enough, we will be heard and this government will listen’.”
She will not be the only north Wales born MP representing an English constituency in the commons, however.
On the Government benches, fellow Welsh-speaker Stuart Andrew grew up on Anglesey and is a former pupil of Ysgol David Hughes on the island and also served as a Tory – and briefly Labour – councillor in Wrexham.
