FASHION shops Peacocks and Jaeger have gone into administration, threatening the future of up to 4,700 jobs and almost 500 shops.
The owner of the retailers Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group failed to find a buyer for both businesses.
Helen Mary Jones MS, Plaid Cymru Shadow Minister for the Economy and Tackling Poverty said:
“This is potentially really bad news. This sector of retail has been hit hard by the Coronavirus crisis. Wales cannot afford to lose these jobs, especially at this time. Many of the jobs in Peacocks are in Wales and many of the workers are women.
“I am calling on Welsh Government to step in as a matter of urgency to take all steps possible to support the company and try to ensure that the company can be sold as a going concern.”
The MS has tabled a written question to the Welsh Government about the impact of the announcement on jobs in Wales.
