LAST Friday Llanelli MP Nia Griffith opened a new project off Station Road, in the heart of the Tyisha Ward, Llanelli. Organised by local councillors Suzy Curry and Andre McPherson, the centre will house a foodbank and a school uniform bank for Bigyn and Pen Rhos school uniforms, as well as providing a meeting place for residents wanting to see their councillors.

Opening the foodbank, Nia Griffith said,

“This foodbank is another practical initiative by councillors Suzy and Andre, who are determined to get help to where it is needed, whether it is sorting out sub-standard housing or getting a local play park.

It is a sad fact that we are seeing far too much in work poverty…… people who are working hard, but whose pay simply does not keep up with the cost of living, and for whom one small crisis can drain family finances. In Parliament, I will be continuing to urge the UK Government to end poverty wages and sort out the Universal Credit shambles which is leaving people destitute. ”

Cllr Suzy Curry commented,

“I’d like to thank everyone who has brought donations, and, in particular, Claire from Myrtle House foodbank, for her support and advice in helping us set up this outreach foodbank in the heart of the Tyisha ward. We will opening Tuesdays 5-7pm and Saturdays 8.30am – 10am, when we know there is not much other help available. If you are donating school uniforms, please make sure they are in good condition.”

Cllr Andre McPherson added,

“And l’d like to stress that these opening times are also for any local residents who want to drop in and see us, their councillors, whether it is about specific problems or ideas for improving the area or just for a chat. There is going to be a lot of regeneration in this area in the next few years, and we want to make sure that local people’s views are listened to. ”

For info about getting help or making donations of food or uniforms (in good condition) for Bigyn and Pen Rhos Schools, please contact the Councillors.
