Work to begin on Porthcawl new £2.1m Cosy Corner’s community facilities

WORK is due to begin this summer on Porthcawl’s all-new community facilities in Cosy Corner following a £2.1m investment.

The project is designed to contribute to the wider Porthcawl regeneration programme, by improving the local economy for the community and visitors to the area. The wider project includes the regeneration and development of the new marina, new sea defences, the recently restored Jennings Building, forthcoming improvements to the eastern breakwater and more.

The plans submitted include a single-story stone and glass-clad building incorporating premises suitable for retail and start-up enterprises, a space intended for community use, office space for the operation of Porthcawl Marina, a fully accessible changing place facility and public toilets.

The all-new community facilities in Cosy Corner are expected to be complete in time for Spring 2023.

Following the Porthcawl Placemaking Strategy public consultation, it has also been confirmed that in addition to the new development, there was also a strong desire from residents to have a significant amount of open space located around Salt Lake, Town Centre, Marina and Eastern Promenade area to provide spaces for people to meet, relax and take part in activities which can be supported by cafes, leisure, and community facilities.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Education Cllr Charles Smith said:

“This development is all about providing an attractive and sustainable building that will be a real asset to the local community and offers visitors something different.

At the same time, the development is about reflecting the character of the maritime site and the surrounding coastal environment.”

The council has previously used funding from the Tourism Attractor Destination Programme to successfully deliver the £1.5m Watersports Centre at Rest Bay, refurbish the kiosk building at Porthcawl Marina.
