World Cup excitement in Ceredigion

The excitement of the World Cup is increasing in Ceredigion with many activities across the county.

Wales will travel to Qatar in November for the 2022 World Cup, 64 years since they last reached the competition.

An education package has been created for schools which includes all kinds of different cross-curricular activities related to football. There are some challenges and competitions too!

All Ceredigion Primary Schools collaborate with the poet Ceri Wyn Jones to create a joint poem. The idea is that the ball (couplet) is passed from one school to another turning it all into a special video. Aneirin Karadog is the poet who undertakes the task of creating a poem with the Ceredigion Secondary Schools, and the finished poem will be turned into a picture by Lizzie Spikes. The schools are also busy rehearsing Dafydd Iwan’s famous song, ‘Yma o Hyd’, creating a good luck video for the Welsh football team to show our support.

On the national day of Welsh football on 25 November, all Ceredigion schools will support the game from their schools. They will watch Wales play Iran, decorate the school, and enjoy football activities.

The icing on the cake will be an interview with a member of the Welsh Football Team, Rhys Norrington Davies. Rhys is originally from Talybont and a former pupil of Ysgol Comins Coch and Ysgol Penglais.

Cered, as part of the Mentrau Iaith network, has launched a competition to create a design for a bucket hat. They will also create a mural and hold singing sessions by using a recently developed booklet of Welsh football songs.

A variety of activities will be held in Ceredigion Libraries leading up to the big competition including a reading challenge for children. Remember to follow Llyfrgell Ceredigion Library on Facebook for the latest updates.

As supporters of the Red Wall, the residents of Ceredigon are proud of their success in reaching Qatar and support their inspiring journey. This is also an opportunity to promote the Welsh language and Wales through a range of football activities.”

This year’s World Cup is being played in Qatar between 21 November and 18 December, with Wales’ group games being played on 21, 25 and 29 November.
