Calls for Welsh scheme to support Welsh farmers after DEFRA announce England only scheme

PLAID’S Llyr Gruffydd MS calls for Welsh scheme to support Welsh farmers after DEFRA announcement

Plaid Cymru MS Llyr Gruffydd has called on the Welsh Government to bring forward a support scheme for farmers after DEFRA announced an England-only scheme to help dairy farmers through the crisis.

Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd and Shadow Minister for the Environment and Rural Affairs Llyr Gruffydd said,

“Farmers in Wales have been overlooked and undervalued for far too long.

Two months ago Plaid Cymru was calling on the UK and Welsh Governments to bring forward a bespoke business support scheme for those dairy farmers facing serious difficulties as a result of the impact of coronavirus. The Welsh Government can no longer bury its head in the sand and it must now act to provide direct support to those Welsh farmers who need it.

“Lesley Griffiths and her advisors have to see that we will lose a number of farm businesses over the coming weeks unless action is taken immediately. If the Welsh Government wants a resilient and sustainable food sector in the future, those farmers affected must be given help to survive the coming months. Standing idly by is not an option.

“Plaid Cymru again repeats our call for the Welsh Government to act with urgency in bringing forward a support scheme to help see Welsh farmers through these hugely challenging times.”
