Tomorrow (Tuesday, November 16) is the last day for residents in the Victoria ward to register to vote in the upcoming by-election.

It is the second by-election in Newport in less than six months. It has been called following Abdul-Majid Rahman’s resignation on October 13.

Mr Rahman, who had represented the Victoria ward since May 2012, resigned due to “personal reasons”.

Postal vote applications can be made up until 5pm on November 17, while proxy vote applications can be made up until 5pm on November 24.

The by-election will be held on Thursday, December 2 and the polls will be open between 7am and 10pm.

It is possible to get an emergency proxy vote up until 5pm on the day of the election, because of physical incapacity, including Covid.

The new councillor will represent the Victoria ward along side Labour councillor Farzina Hussain.

The candidates are:

Gavin John Horton – Labour
John Edmunds Millar – Liberal Democrats
Muhammad Tariq – Conservatives
You can register to vote by visiting gov.uk/register-to-vote or by calling 01633 210744 between 9am and 5pm on weekdays.
