Llanelli’s Mandy Lane to cycle local ‘Everest Challenge’ for Wales Air Ambulance

JUST two years ago, Mandy Lane had very little cycling experience – now this weekend she will be attempting to climb Trimsaran’s ‘Everest’ on her bike!

Mandy is taking part in the challenge to raise funds for the Wales Air Ambulance Charity and has already raised £370 of her £1,200 target.

Mandy joined Bynea Cycling Club just over two years ago and was ‘welcomed with open arms and encouraged from the very beginning’ by everyone at the club.

The climb is nearly a mile long with an average gradient of 9.2 per cent. Mandy will have to cycle up it 77 times to reach the elevation of 29,029ft / 8,848m.

The climb is especially relevant to Mandy because not only is it the Bynea Cycling Club hill climb time trial, but also because she has avoided riding it for so long.

This year has been extremely hard for the club as ‘much-loved’ members have sadly passed away.

Reflecting on why she has set herself the challenge to cycle ‘Mount Everest’, Mandy from Llanelli, said: “I have wanted to give something back to the club as a form of thank you for the guidance, advice, help, and friendship I have received over the years. I would never have been able to attempt the Everest challenge without my club’s support.

“One of our members who often kept me company on the back of the club run on the climbs in the early days, put forward the club’s charity Wales Air Ambulance after his 6-week old granddaughter was airlifted to hospital. His passion for the air ambulance and the work they do was undeniable.

“I am now in a position to not only say thank you to my cycling club for their influential and integral part in my cycling journey by supporting the club’s nominated charity, but also raise awareness and funds for a truly incredible cause. One that has affected many of our members.”

Mark Stevens, the Charity’s South Wales Fundraising Manager, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to Mandy and Bynea Cycling Club for their support.

“The fundraiser and picking us as their charity of the year will help us to keep our flying medics in the air, and without support like theirs, we wouldn’t be able to continue our missions across Wales. Good luck Mandy!”

The challenge will take place on Saturday July 25 on the Bynea Cycling Club hill climb course in Trimsaran.
