Plans for affordable homes in Abergwili approved

PLANS for affordable houses and flats in Abergwili, Carmarthen, have been approved following a site visit by Carmarthenshire Council’s planning committee.

The four houses and two flats will be built on a wedge of land on High Street, opposite the entrance to Carmarthen Museum and the near the roundabout with the A40. It is currently a paddock.

Abergwili Community Council objected to the proposal by Tai Wales and West Housing, saying the village was overpopulated and that no increase in traffic should be encouraged due to the site’s proximity to Abergwili Primary School.

It also raised concerns about flooding and demands on the sewerage system.

The planning authority also received seven letters of objection from residents.

The report before the planning committee acknowledged the traffic and parking concerns but said a suitable access and sufficient on-site parking would be provided.

Officers also said the site itself was not affected by flooding, and that Welsh Water had not raised sewerage capacity concerns.

Speaking at the planning committee meeting, Cllr Kevin Madge said: “I spoke in support last time – I don’t change my mind.

“We do need affordable houses in our communities. This is a prime example.”

He also said he was reassured that trees along the boundary were to be retained.

A large sycamore within a neighbouring garden had been earmarked for the chop, but subsequent changes to the scheme’s layout mean it will be kept.

The committee voted in favour of the officers’ recommendation of approval, which comes with 17 conditions.
