CARDIGAN RNLI volunteers were called out on Sunday (Nov 3), following a report that two surfers were in difficulty near rocks at the base of the cliffs near the Cliff Hotel, Cardigan.
The D-Class in-shore lifeboat, ‘Elsie Ida Mead’, was initially launched and began to search the area for both surfers. During the search, information was received that one of the surfers had made it back to the shore on his own however the second surfer was still unaccounted for. Cardigan’s RNLI Atlantic lifeboat, ‘Albatross’ was then launched to assist in the search for the second surfer.
Whilst searching the area shouts were heard by the volunteer crew on board the inshore lifeboat between Cei Bach and Caemaes Head, the search was then focused in this area and an 18-year-old male surfer was successfully rescued from the sea.
It is believed the surfer jumped off the rocks near the Cliff Hotel and was caught by the strong currents in that area which carried him towards Caemaes Head where he was found by the RNLI crew and taken to safety.
The RNLI would always advise surfers to check the local forecast for wind, tide and swell before going out. Even experienced surfers can get into difficulty very quickly during bad weather conditions.
