Local & National News for Wales

LAST week three small schools were closed and next week Ceredigion County Council is set to take the next step in creating a larger ‘area school’ in the Aeron Valley.

Earlier this year an engagement exercise was held with the local communities about building a new school for the Aeron Valley area for the pupils of Ciliau Parc Community Primary School, Dihewyd Community Primary School and Felinfach Community Primary School.

These three schools will be closed, with another – Cilcennin Community Primary School – one of the three due to close at the end of this term, following a vote of full council on May 24.

A site for the new school is to be decided but it is planned to be for around 210 pupils aged three to 11, Welsh medium, with the introduction of nursery and community provision.

Concerns raised include increased travel times for some pupils, disruption to children and the loss of facilities from villages.

Welsh Government 21st Century School funding is available for building a new school.

Cabinet members will meet on Tuesday, June 4 and are recommended to commence a statutory consultation on June 5 2019 to establish a new area school on a new site in the Aeron Valley.
