‘Support for Self-Employed is long overdue’, says Leader of Welsh Lib Dems

WELSH Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds has welcomed the package of support for the self-employed announced today by Chancellor Rushi Sunak.

The package of support announced by the Chancellor will pay the self-employed 80% of their profits, up to £2,500 a month. The scheme is expected to be up and running by June.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds said:

“I welcome the support announced today by the Chancellor to keep the self-employed in business and protect them from hardship due to Coronavirus. This support is long overdue so it’s essential the government makes it available as soon as possible.

“Unfortunately there may still be people who fall through the cracks, so Universal Credit needs to work for everyone. The UK Government must immediately abolish the five-week wait for the first payment; alongside ensuring the application process is robust enough to enable everyone who is eligible to apply immediately.

“Supporting workers, the self-employed, homeowners and renters is an expensive undertaking, but a necessary one. The government is taking the right steps today. I hope the government will support people through these trying times and allow everyone to rebuild and resume their lives as normal once this pandemic is over.”
