Town council to take over Tenby tourist information centre

NEGOTIATIONS are underway for Tenby Town Council to take over the tourist information centre in the town that has been closed by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Closing the TIC will bring £60,000 of savings and plans for a community asset transfer (CAT) of the facility are underway, cabinet members heard at its meeting Monday (December 2).

Cabinet member for economy, tourism, leisure and culture  Cllr Paul Miller said that the council “shouldn’t have kept it open as long as we did” and it was an example of where the authority needed to be “ruthless about driving out unnecessary costs.”

He said it was “old hat, we don’t need it” and it did not provide  economic benefit to the area.

It was hoped that a CAT would be in place by April subject to all the requirements being met, said cabinet member for finance Cllr Bob Kilmister.

The Town Council had worked “very constructively” since the closure was announced he added and the new plan would allow them to start a new service.

Cabinet approved a recommendation to allow negotiations to continue with Tenby Town Council to allow the TIC to reopen in 2020.
