THE Welsh Liberal Democrats have paid tribute to those who made sacrifices during the Second World War.

Paying tribute to the sacrifices made during the Second World War as the UK marks Victory in Europe Day, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds said:

“Today is the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Today is the time for us all to remember those who stepped up and put their lives on the line to defend our freedoms and defeat fascism.

“Welsh Regiments have a long and proud history in our armed forces, well known for being steadfast and answering the call of duty when we need them most. We need to honour and recognise this huge legacy of service by all of our brave servicemen and women.

“As we move forward, we need to look at the way things are here in Wales. It is clear that Lloyd George’s mission of building a ‘home fit for heroes’ is not yet accomplished, and we need to ensure that it is.

“So today, let us honour all those who have served on the frontline and given their lives to defend our freedom. Then from tomorrow, let’s focus on working together to build a fairer and more just society here at home.”

Liberal Democrat Defence Spokesperson Jamie Stone also paid tribute, saying:

“Although the 75th anniversary of VE Day will be spent under lockdown, we can all take this opportunity to honour those who sacrificed for our freedom.

“Today I remember the millions who died fighting in the war from the safety of my home. I am sincerely grateful for the arrangement of virtual remembrance services across the UK to commemorate the heroes of World War II.”
