Covid-19 concerns as deaths in Wales’s adult care homes double in April

FIGURES obtained by Plaid Cymru show that deaths in Adult Care Homes in Wales have more than doubled in April compared with the corresponding period last year.

Plaid Cymru Leader Adam Price said there is “significant under reporting” of Covid-19 deaths in Wales if the increase was a result of the virus.

According to Care Inspectorate Wales a total of 486 deaths were recorded between April 1st and 14th. The corresponding figure for 2019 was 220.

There was a similar increase in the total number of deaths between March 26th and April 8th (431) compared with the same period in 2019 (229).

Plaid Cymru Leader Adam Price said,

“Every death is a tragic loss for individuals and families as well as for those who care for the most vulnerable in society.”

“Although we cannot be sure of the cause of death, it is highly concerning that the number of deaths reported in care homes in Wales has more than doubled compared to the corresponding period last year.”

“If, and it would seem logical to assume, that many are dying having contracted Covid-19, the true number of deaths from the virus is being significantly under reported.”
