Llanelli MS to host online public meeting about future of Llanelli town centre

LLANELLI’S Member of the Senedd Lee Waters is inviting members of the public to an online meeting about the future of the town centre.

After a difficult year with the pandemic, Mr Waters is pushing Carmarthenshire Council to produce a ‘turnaround plan for town’  that can help get Llanelli back on its feet beyond covid.

Announcing the event, Lee Waters said:

“A town centre is so much more than a collection of buildings, it’s a community where people come together and celebrate the place they live in. We’re missing that interaction intently because of the pandemic.

We’re fortunate to have so many longstanding traders here in Llanelli, but they’re not enough to sustain the town centre by themselves. As many of you have told me, the town centre has been struggling long before the pandemic hit.

That’s why I’m calling on Carmarthenshire Council to produce a turnaround plan that will enable our town centre to thrive beyond covid.”

He added:

“Welsh Government funding is helping to deliver renovations at Al Atalia, the YMCA and soon Y Link near Sports Direct. We believe in a town centre first principle that presumes new public amenities like nurseries and pharmacies should be located in town to help footfall.

“But town will need to offer something completely different in the years ahead if it is to compete with online shopping and out of town developments. If Llanelli town centre is to thrive, it will need to offer an experience you can’t get online or out of town – a place people want to come and linger with plentiful leisure and cultural activities as well as attractive residential areas.”
